A scarf is a piece of cloth worn around the neck and shoulders or on head to safeguard against cold. Different types of scarves symbolize one´s belonging to their relevant group. Additionally, it gives a trendy look or simply conforms to a religious obligation.
Depending upon the usage, a scarf may be made of wool, silk, cotton, chiffon, pashmina, cashmere, rayon, satin, georgette etc. Further, it may be knitted, hand woven, crocheted, hand painted, embroidered or printed. They are generally worn as head scarves, tying scarves, football scarves, hair scarves, beach scarves, coat scarves, turban scarves, neck scarves, hip scarves etc.
To provide protection from cold and chilly winds, a scarf (also called muffler) knitted from any warm yarn is wrapped around the neck, enveloping it completely. This kind of scarf is preferably made from wool, silk, pashmina, fur etc., and measures around 50 inches in length and12 inches in breadth.
Further, in arid climates where atmosphere is defiled, people wear a scarf, commonly called bandana, on the head to keep hair clean. With passage of time, these scarves have gained popularity and turned into the fashionable accessory. It is evident that cravat which is emerged from the scarves, had found its provenience in Croatia.
Scarves have also been a part of the uniform for various scouts associations like "The Bharat Scouts and Guides" in India, and many other throughout the world. They are embossed with an emblematic logo to represent their belonging to a group. Similarly, old British academic institutions used scarves of specific color combinations signifying their particular school or university.
Since early 1900, distinctly colored scarves came to worn by football fans to represent their affiliation towards a team. These scarves usually contain the club crest, pictures of legendary players, various slogans pertaining to the team and its rivals. During matches or at their commencement, fans stretch out their scarves above their head thus creating a `scarf wall´ and sing along the club anthem.
These days, many fashion-conscious women wear chromatic scarves even in summer months, commonly called stoles, corresponding to their outfits to convey a style statement. These scarves are generally made of chenille, cotton, satin, chiffon, rayon, polyester and georgette or printed fabric and measure around 55 inches in length 15 inches in breadth. These scarves are available in a wide of range of colors and in various elegant and fascinating designs.
As a religious obligation, Islamic women wear a headscarf, commonly known as `Hijab´ to signify their modest clothing. Even in Sikhism, no man or woman is allowed to enter their place of worship without a scarf.
